Office administration is a great career choice because you learn to perform many different tasks that qualify you to work for a variety of employers, which gives you a lot of job flexibility. Learning office skills and particular program material can establish you as a candidate for many employment opportunities and are applicable to a variety of administrative positions.

After working for one company for a while, you will realize how very portable your credentials are and, if you aren’t happy or want a better paying job, your experience will make it easy for you to move on to another company. As well, your background will make finding part-time work a simple matter if that is a good choice for you at different times in your life.

Aside from courses in general office administration, you can also specialize in insurance licensing. Both programs offer some of the same or similar courses but insurance licensing specifically prepares you for work in an insurance office or prepares you to take a national examination that, upon passing, will give you the recognized professional designation of Canadian Accredited Insurance Broker (CAIB).

In any office setting, you will be expected to perform particular tasks and be familiar with general office procedures. There will be minor differences depending on the nature of the business, but you will be able to adapt what you learn in these courses:

  • Administrative office procedures and how various employees interact with each other and the supervisors, and general office etiquette
  • Fundamental or simple accounting
  • Computerized accounting
  • Choices of MS Office software
  • Choice of taking a practicum

Practical Courses are Available in the Office Administration Program

In addition to the courses or course choices listed above:

  • you will also study design skills and can choose from MS publisher, and Adobe InDesign, PhotoShop, etc.
  • you will learn how to prepare reports memorandums, and correspondence; how to schedule appointments and track inventory; and to assist in the preparation of budgets and expenses

  • Accounts Payable Clerk
  • Junior Accountant Assistant
  • Management Planning

Specialty Courses are Available in the Insurance Licensing Program

In addition to the general administration courses, you can make these choices:

  • MS Office courses that will be useful in an insurance office with selections such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • you can study insurance fundamentals
  • you can take the CAIB program to learn all aspects of property and casualty insurance in preparation for the national exam by which you can earn the CAIB designation to become an insurance advisor or broker

  • With the fundamentals of insurance, you are uniquely qualified to work as an insurance administrative assistant or office work in an insurance company
  • With preparation to write the national exam, you can pass and earn your CAIB designation and then work as an insurance representative or an insurance broker

If you want a variety of employment choices and are interested in office administration work in the insurance industry or in any business where the company appeals to you, office administration courses will prepare you to get to where you want to be. You will add to your employment prospects if you add other useful courses to your studies, such as photography and/or website maintenance.
